There’s something to be said about vacationing in your hometown. I have lived in Pittsburgh my entire life, but I love how a quick staycation can refresh and refocus a working mom! Spending a weekend in Pittsburgh with one of my best friends was the perfect medicine for this tired momma. While we did a lot of work (I mean, the #nsale was kicking off that weekend), we got to enjoy plenty of what my favorite city has to offer. If you are considering a weekend in Pittsburgh, you’ll want to read this guide!
Where To Stay During your Weekend in Pittsburgh
Emily and I were invited to stay in the spacious two-bedroom suite at the AC Hotel Pittsburgh. This room is loaded with amenities. It checks every box for a family weekend in Pittsburgh. Parents will REALLY appreciate the completely separate bedroom, which includes a television, sitting area, and noise machine to drown out the world. With two queen beds and a king bed, the two-bedroom suite is also great for a girl’s weekend. (Looking at you, bachelorettes!) In addition to great rooms to meet every need, you’ll find an excellent and accommodating staff, reasonably priced valet parking with unlimited in and out privileges, all the crushed ice Emily’s little heart could desire, and simple touches that elevate a hotel stay from average to amazing.
The AC Hotel is conveniently located between Pittsburgh’s lively Strip District and the Downtown area of Pittsburgh. It is within walking distance to many of my favorite restaurants, theater, nightlife, and unique shopping, making it the best place to stay during your weekend in Pittsburgh. As they say- Location, Location, Location!
Where to Eat + Drink During Your Weekend in Pittsburgh
Something we love about the AC Hotel Pittsburgh is the rooftop bar at Level7, their in-house bar and restaurant. We enjoyed delicious snacks and drinks in this beautiful, brightly lit space. Start your evening off in the hotel lobby, uniquely accessed via the 7th floor of the hotel. You will want to enjoy the charcuterie plate and finish with cookies for dessert! The Level7 bartenders are well versed in their drink offerings. They can help you pick a crafty cocktail, wine, or brew that will hit the spot. Level7 Lounge is also a great spot to unwind after a busy work day.
After your early evening drinks and snacks from the AC Hotel, you’re just a quick walk or an uber ride away to many of the city’s best restaurants including Eleven, Butcher in the Rye, Tako, Bar Marco (A personal long-time favorite- their wine program is unreal), Dianoia’s Eatery, and Union Standard.
If quick, casual bites are your jam- you can walk to Condado Tacos’ Downtown location. We stopped in for a few build-your-own style tacos and margaritas- the Margarita Delicioso is heaven on earth. The beer lover will want to stop at Cinderlands Warehouse, which is new to the Strip District! In addition to their own brews, they offer several unique cocktails and eats in a lively setting which includes a fun rooftop bar to hang at! (If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we love drinks and rooftops!)
[Condado has locations in Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Royal Oak, MI + Two Pittsburgh Locations- Downtown and Lawrenceville].
Of course, if you’re a lover of all things Pittsburgh as I am, you’ll want to stop at Primanti’s in the Strip, which is, in my humble opinion, the best Primatnis location city-wide. Don’t be alarmed if your feet stick to the floor- this Pittsburgh staple is a must visit. Order a Pastrami and Cheese or the #2 Best-Seller, and don’t be the person who asks for the coleslaw and fries on the side. No one likes that guy.
What to do during your Weekend in Pittsburgh
If you’re staying at the AC Hotel, you’ll love being in the strip district come Saturday morning. Start your morning with the perfect cup of coffee from La Prima Espresso, located next door to the hotel. From there, venture down Penn Avenue and let your taste buds be your guide as you stroll the vast assortment of international grocers and retailers. The Strip is very busy on Saturday mornings, so it makes for excellent people watching as well.
If you’re traveling with family, the afternoon is the perfect opportunity to hit up any of the city’s museums. The Heinz History Center and the Carnegie Science Center are our personal favorites, but there are plenty to choose from. Check out Randyland which is 100% free and unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, and the National Aviary. Adults traveling with other adults or older children should check out the Andy Warhol Museum or the Mattress Factory.
In addition to unique museums, Pittsburgh offers a lively music scene, beautiful architecture, and a must-do incline ride up Mount Washington, offering the best view the city has to offer. If you’re looking to venture away from downtown, your weekend in Pittsburgh must include a trip to any of the wonderful neighborhoods that make Pittsburgh what it is. If you can only do one, I recommend a visit to the hip Lawrenceville neighborhood.
But Why a Weekend in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh is more than just a town for maniacal football fans. The Steel City, nicknamed as such because it was once the epicenter of America’s Steel Industry, is home to world class dining, art, beautiful architecture, impressive innovation, and more than 400 bridges. It’s where old meets new- with plenty of dive bars nestled between trendy, award-winning bar programs, and famous, age-old eateries scattered amongst the ever growing list of fine dining choices. Yinz will love your weekend in Pittsburgh.
